Preview: Indian River rebuild?
L.C. Bird came to Norfolk on Thursday to tackle Maury and Tallwood

Maury Head Coach Chris Fraser said it best. “We want to see the best of the best. Our kids need to be able to gauge where they are. To be able to go up against an L.C. Bird and make some plays, it gives us a little confidence and it shows us areas that we need to work on.”
The scrimmage was the first of the preseason for both teams. Maury and L.C. Bird went at each other for well over an hour before Tallwood High School arrived at Powhatan Stadium near Old Dominion University. Tallwood came on to challenge L.C. Bird, then the two teams from the 757 rumbled while L.C. Bird boarded their buses and headed back to Richmond.
“We know against a team like (L.C. Bird) we have to have more than just our base Wing-T stuff installed. They’re just so well coached,” said Fraser. “We worked on what we’ve been working on. Defensively, we know we have to clean up some tackling. We had guys get to the ball, but we blew a couple of coverages. Again, there’s no shame. L.C. Bird is one of the best teams in the state and that’s what we wanted to see.”
Coach Bedwell at L.C. Bird was happy with the “good work” his team was able to get in.
“The biggest thing is that you have to go back and evaluate film. Corbin Donaldson really impressed me with the ball in his hands at running back. Manny Conway, on defense, really made some plays for us and those are kids that we really didn’t know about,” Bedwell said. “We have a couple of kids sitting out the scrimmage that normally play for us like Rayshard Ashby (Virginia Tech commit), but it’s a good chance to get to see some other kids running around.”
Bedwell wouldn’t give up to much about his game planning other than to say that Tallwood’s spread offense, Maury’s Wing-T, and the speed of the athletes of the 757 would give his team some looks that they needed to see prior to the season.
“Offensively, we were about as basic as we could be for a first scrimmage,” said the coach. “We’re able to see two different defenses tonight and two different offenses tonight: the spread and a little bit of Wing-T which is what Meadowbrook does.”
