Hokies land their first 757 commit in Hezekiah Grimsley

Virginia Tech is certainly off to a good start with the Class of 2017. Lafayette wide receiver Hezekiah Grimsley (JR WR 6-1 180) made his verbal commitment to the Hokies on Friday.
“Truly blessed to say that I am verbally committing to play football at Virginia Tech,” said Grimsley via Twitter.
The addition of Grimsley will add depth at a position that Coach Justin Fuente’s Hokies need help with. Beamer Ball was about special teams and defense first. Bud Foster is still around to keep the performance level of the defense up to par, but Fuente is now on board to implement a more aggressive offense.
We’re comparing two different teams playing against two different sets of opponents, but Beamer’s 2015 Hokies averaged 29 points per game in the regular season while Fuente’s Memphis Tigers averaged almost 43 points per game. It may take a year or two, but Fuente’s offense is expected to light up the scoreboard at Lane Stadium.
Grimsley held ten scholarship offers: Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Iowa State, Marshall, Hampton University, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Old Dominion, Syracuse and Maryland.
The Hokies were on Grimsley early, and according to Lafayette Head Coach Andy Linn, the opportunity was hard to pass up, but the relationship between Hezekiah and the coaching staff sealed the deal.
“They really struck up a relationship when they met,” said Linn. “He had some great visits and was very comfortable with them. The proximity and the fact that they’ll pass the ball a lot didn’t hurt.”
Lafayette High School runs a traditional Wing-T as their base offense, but that didn’t stop Grimsley from racking up over 1000 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in the Rams’ 2015 season. This fall will be a year where he’ll be relied upon for senior leadership as Lafayette looks to run the table in the Bay Rivers District for the fourth year in a row. After that, his speed and athleticism will be set loose in the college ranks.
Blacksburg, here he comes.
