Three legendary programs met on Friday night at Ocean Lakes and all three walked away with preseason improvements

Preseason scrimmages are all about making football teams better, not what’s on the scoreboard, so you won’t find recruit757 posting scores from scrimmages (as much as die hard fans want them). This is the time for tweaking the playbook, trying out new personnel, and making sure that players understand their roles. You’ll see second team on second team. You’ll see coaches trying a lot of things that they wouldn’t risk a loss on in season.
For Heritage, Indian River and Ocean Lakes, Friday night’s scrimmage was about getting ready for the season opener.
“We did some good things and we did some not so good things. The positive about it all is that the not so good things are things we can get better at,” said Ocean Lakes Head Coach Joe Jones. We gotta get better defensively at tackling. That’s a thing we can work on and get better at next week. Offensively, we gotta get better at hitting the holes, running down hill, making sure we’re sustaining our blocks and blocking our back side.”
“Offensively, we did a pretty good job up front of creating some holes, creating some spaces. We did a better job as it went on of hitting the hole better and using our instincts.”
Indian River Head Coach Glenwood Ferebee was upbeat about his players and their efforts.
“We looked pretty good. We’re fast, which I expected. We’re young though, we’re young. Some of the young guys have matured a lot,” Ferebee said. “We got what we wanted to accomplish tonight. Some of the guys acclimated to playing varsity football. It was a surprisingly good showing for some of them, so I’m encouraged.”
Indian River showed their big play capabilities Friday night. That might be the most exciting outcome from the jamboree.
Ferebee: “We lost guys, but we still have guys. I never (thought) we were in trouble because of the guys that we lost. Losing Beckett, Yulee, Tyain (Smith), Tyre Givers-Wilson, those guys are hard to replace. The guys came in today and did a pretty good job. We’ve come in preaching ‘TEAM’ and being disciplined. You lose (big names) and everyone has to get a lot closer.”
Coach Massenburg from Heritage left the field before Antowyne Shaw was able to get a video interview, but you can catch a glimpse of the Hurricanes in the video below.
